WORK CUSTOMARILY INCLUDED IN FULL DOUBLE-HUNG WINDOW RESTORATION

  • Set up containment area around window for lead-containing paint safety

  • Remove upper and lower sash from frame. Put plastic over exterior opening

  • Remove excess paint from friction surfaces and inside face of upper sash meeting rail

  • Use existing or create pocket covers in jambs to access weights. Check that weights and sashes match. Upgrade weights when necessary. Put pocket covers back in jamb

  • Replace old ropes (broken or not) with new rope (cotton outside matches original look, synthetic core ensures estimated 65-year lifetime)

  • Clean excess paint off pulley as much as possible and lubricate pulley

  • Make necessary repairs to sashes including, but not limited to:

    • fix loose corners
    • repair missing wood with epoxy/putty
    • reinforce corners with dowels if necessary
    • replace cracked or missing glazing compound with linseed oil-based glazing compound
  • Clean glass

  • Re-install sashes in frames. Use new parting beads (Verticle Grain Fir)

  • Lubricate sashes & stops and re-install inside stops

  • Clean up
