Whether a consultation or a quote, the first visit is free.
- If you have a building in the greater Seattle area that has wood, single pane, double-hung windows in need of repair or restoration, please call (no text) or email to make an appointment. Phone works best.
- I typically make appointments for late-afternoon (5:30 PM or so) weekdays.
- During the visit please tell me what your goals are.
- If I am not the right person for the job I will do my best to help you find the right person.
- If I can do the work, I will survey the windows and take notes.
- I will discuss what it is I can do for your windows and how I would go about doing it.
- I will discuss the potential for the presence of lead-containing paint (see also under "LEAD").
- I will discuss lead safe work practices; the how and why.
- I will show you my licenses and insurance certificates.
- I will prepare a not-to-exceed quote for you (usually within a week) and email or mail it to you.
- I then wait for you to decide whether you wish for me to add your name to my (no obligation) waiting list.
- This does not require a deposit.
- If you wish for me to coordinate with manufacturers of custom products (if matching new frames, sashes, or leaded panels are needed, for instance) I will have you pay those companies the required deposits to start the manufacturing process.
- I will contact you for scheduling about two weeks before I can start work on your windows.
- We find a time that suits both our schedules to do the work.
- I show up to do the work and don't leave until you tell me I'm done.
- I will have you sign a receipt for the EPA brochure Renovate Right (see under "Lead") and when applicable a copy of the Department of Labor and Industry's Notice to Customers.
- Upon completion of the work, you pay me in cash or (preferably) by personal check.
- I plan for my work to last at least 25 years (hopefully much longer). If a problem does crop up I expect to hear from you and I will return to take care of it as soon as possible.
Double-hung Window Restoration is a one-man company.
This has the advantage that the same guy who shows up to do the initial visit will also do the work (no confusion about what you were promised).
The disadvantage, however, is that because the services provided are very popular the wait list is long. Very long. For the past four years it has hovered around a 36-month wait from the time you ask to have your name added to the wait list to when the work is done.
As stated above; adding your name to the wait list does not require a deposit. It is not a contract. It merely holds your place in the queue of clients. The best strategy is to ask to have your name added to the list (so the clock starts ticking). If you find someone else to do the work sooner a simple phone call or email message is all that is required to have your name removed from the wait list.
If your turn comes up at a bad time (your water heater just broke and its replacement takes precedent, for instance) you can ask to have the work postponed. That does not mean you go back to the end of the line. You only have to go through that ridiculous wait time once. Returning customers do get preferential treatment.
